 As a serious contender to booking a band, always consider the mobile disco. Now it could be said that live music is better – well yes I do not dispute that as a musician, but as a mobile ‘DJ’ lets look at what is available. As with other forms of entertainment the market is “buyer beware” shop around ask the questions, compare the costs however cheap is not always best. As a DJ I help potential customers on the phone, asking the right questions of you, as it is not easy particularly if it the first time booking entertainment say for your parents wedding anniversary or your own wedding.
I need to establish a communication that brings me the information about the venue, the space, the power supply and location as well as explain my offerings without getting too technical so that the customer is confident in speaking to me.
Music from a DJ can certainly be very varied covering all tastes or narrowed to fit a themed evening. Discuss sound /volume and lighting. Larger operators can offer some fabulous extras such as uplighters, starcloths, snow, fog and haze machines. Djs can also work with bands and some will also provide the stage and dancefloor lighting (and even mix the band!).
The DJ can bring mood and atmosphere to any evening from a small area in a public bar to a 500 capacity indoor marquee for any event or even outside for the radio station roadshow where an audience needs to be worked. Choice of DJs is varied from bedroom mixers (best suited to a club/dance environment) to personality Djs who can work an audience with skill of speech and music choice. From my own perspective and experience I would say that “a good DJ is a person who understands and connects with their audience and knows when to let the music talk!”
