Broadening horizons: NOEA focuses on
security beyond the SIA.
As many security
staff across the
country renew
their SIA (Security
Industry Authority),
licences, it seems a good
time to reflect. For the
last three years (2004-
2007), security
companies have been
coming to terms with
the effects of new licensing for the industry. Other
industry wide legislation, such as the licensing act
and the smoking regulations have also had an
impact on management of security operations.
There’s been a lot to keep up with!

Live Music Corner
Music is very much a part of the Events Industry and we are introducing this new section as a way of reflecting Members’ interests in this area.
The following articles will hopefully be of interest to you:- |

The Britfunk scene
The Britfunk scene really got going in 1979 at a time when bands were taken seriously beyond the soul clubs. Also during this time the music went a long way to counteracting pretty much 10 years of black British Music being ignored by radio, record companies and more or less the mainstream. There had been British soul/funk bands for about as long as there had been soul/funk. Eddy Grant’s Equals are probably the best known, and Average White Band among the most successful, but through the 1960’s and 1970’s the likes of Kokomo, Gonzales and Matata flew the UK soul flag, while Cymande fused jazz, funk and Rasta roots, Black Velvet peddled funk/rock, Osibisa melded sounds from Ghana with those of the Caribbean and The Funkees are fairly self-descriptive.

The Importance of choosing the right entertainment.
When organising an event never underestimate the importance of choosing the right entertainment. Your targeted audience should determine the style and genre of the entertainment you choose. If it’s a Rock festival for instance you don’t want to pick a Dance act.

Disco Entertainment (aka the DJ)
As a serious contender to booking a band, always consider the mobile disco. Now it could be said that live music is better – well yes I do not dispute that as a musician, but as a mobile ‘DJ’ lets look at what is available. As with other forms of entertainment the market is “buyer beware” shop around ask the questions, compare the costs however cheap is not always best.
