Message from the General Secretary
2007 was a great year for NOEA, 2008 will be an exciting year BUT DO NOT FORGET 2009 will be the 30th Anniversary of the Association and plans are already in hand!
Also great news about membership – more of that later!
As I reported at the Annual General Meeting in Bristol last November, each year we drive ourselves to make the Convention more successful, plan enough regional conferences and seminars to meet the demands of members and indeed to push forward for more members – at the end of August the number was 427 but inevitably we lost a few members at the end of a new financial year – see Membership section later in this report.
This report covers the period from September 2006 through to August 2007 although of course there are some grey areas! There is a long lead-in time for arranging conventions and conferences, together with other developments and therefore it is difficult to keep this report exclusive to the period mentioned above. The following is a brief report on our activities and services for the benefit of Members:-
The first major challenge of the Event Industry Forum was the sudden appearance of the proposed British Standard 8901 for the Sustainability of Event Management on 5th July. Michael Bell, NOEA’s BSI panel member has written a full article elsewhere so no further comment from me!
The Association’s most important event was the National Convention and Tribute Celebration Evening held at the Chateau Impney, Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire (28th February – 2nd March). Also held there in 2006.

MEMBERSHIP
At the General Council Meeting in October I reported a total of 411 members, bearing in mind that at last year’s end (31st August 2007) some 20 memberships had been terminated for various reasons. “There would be a major follow up of potential new members in November and I hoped that a target of 450 could be achieved by the time the 2008 Yearbook was to be printed in January – let us see!”

TRADE SHOWS
Over many years NOEA has taken part in the Event Show, London in January and the Showman’s Show in October. These are the key times when the Association is able to promote membership and its annual convention. This has been most successful especially in recent years.

The thoughts of NOEA Vice President - Philip Day
2007 probably saw the biggest growth in the outdoor event industry ever as millions took to the streets, beer gardens and side alleys just around the corner from their offices to indulge in their dirty, disgusting, little habit.
